about

Border Crossing, the DJ and production team originally from west London, bring you the Identity EP – their inaugural release on Blackout ‘77 recordings.

Formerly with First Word records, Border Crossing first appeared in 2004 with their critically acclaimed album Ominous. Blackout ‘77, a label committed to a wide variety of artists, now provides the platform for the genre-spanning group with a name that is perhaps more apt now than ever before.

Founding member Seorais Graham points out, “It was clear in the early 2000s that the movement of people across borders was a critical social and political issue. With globalisation, Brexit, immigration and refugee crises throughout the world, it’s obvious the name’s still relevant today.”

Cloned Dub and Crypto Dub, from the EP, meld reggae and hip hop in a similar vein to previous releases like Searching for Mr Manuva and Jump Down. Fracked Dub and Bad Boy, also on the EP, draw from other musical influences and display Border Crossing’s innovative, eclectic style. “People found it strange that the instrumental Jazz fusion inspired track Flightpath sat alongside the reggae/hip hop of Rankin’s Move on our debut,” explains Seorais. “Nowadays many DJs and producers are similarly keen not to be pigeonholed and work in many genres.”

The six track instrumental EP, with its weighty bass lines and intricate production, will be familiar to those accustomed to the Border Crossing sound. To those new to it, the musical influences: Sly and Robbie, Mantronix and Renegade Soundwave, to name a few, will be heard.

The mixes, executed by Nick Rundall, who was recently in charge of the sound system at Ministry of Sound, add impact to the production and ensure the tracks deliver on the best club sound systems.
